چکیده

A number of deep, wide-field, near-infrared surveys employing new infrared cameras on 4m-class telescopes are about to commence. These surveys have the potential to determine the fraction of luminous dust-obscured quasars that may have eluded surveys undertaken at optical wavelengths. In order to understand the new observations it is essential to make accurate predictions of surface densities and number-redshift relations for unobscured quasars in the near-infrared based on information from surveys at shorter wavelengths. The accuracy of the predictions depends critically on a number of key components. The commonly used single power-law representation for quasar SEDs is inadequate and the use of an SED incorporating the upturn in continuum flux at λ ∼ 12 000 Å is essential. The presence of quasar host galaxies is particularly important over the restframe wavelength interval 8000 < λ < 16 000 Å and we provide an empirical determination of the magnitude distribution of host galaxies using a low redshift sample of quasars from the SDSS DR3 quasar catalogue. A range of models for the dependence of host galaxy luminosity on quasar luminosity is investigated, along with the implications for the near-infrared surveys. Even adopting a conservative model for the behaviour of host galaxy luminosity the number counts for shallow surveys in the K band increase by a factor of two. The degree of morphological selection applied to define candidate quasar samples in the near-infrared is found to be an important factor in determining the fraction of the quasar population included in such samples.

The Optical and Near-Infrared Properties of 2837 Quasars in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in Y JHK imaging, to K = 18.2 (5σ, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues pr...

. 5 m telescope

The ongoing development of large infrared array detectors has enabled wide field, deep surveys to be undertaken. There are, however, a number of challenges in building an infrared instrument which has both excellent optical quality and high sensitivity over a wide field. We discuss these problems in the context of building a wide field imaging camera for the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto with th...

A Large Population of Mid-infrared Selected, Obscured Active Galaxies in the Boötes Field

We identify a population of 640 obscured and 839 unobscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at redshifts 0.7 < z . 3 using multiwavelength observations of the 9 deg2 NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) region in Boötes. We select AGNs on the basis of Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) colors obtained by the IRAC Shallow Survey. Redshifts are obtained from optical spectroscopy or photometric red...

The KX method for producing K-band flux-limited samples of quasars

The longstanding question of the extent to which the quasar population is affected by dust extinction, within host galaxies or galaxies along the line of sight, remains open. More generally, the spectral energy distributions of quasars vary significantly and flux–limited samples defined at different wavelengths include different quasars. Surveys employing flux measurements at widely separated w...

Cosmic Histories of Stars , Gas , Heavy Elements , and Dust

We present a set of coupled equations that relate the stellar, gaseous, chemical, and radiation constituents of the universe averaged over the whole galaxy population. Using as input the available data from quasar absorption-line surveys, optical imaging and redshift surveys, and the COBE DIRBE and FIRAS extragalactic infrared background measurements, we obtain solutions for the cosmic historie...
